ROOST Jekyll Theme
A shared Jekyll theme for ROOST sites on GitHub Pages.
This site is built with the theme itself, so it doubles as a preview. See the kitchen sink for how common content looks.
Usage
Add the theme to your site’s _config.yml:
remote_theme: roostorg/jekyll-theme
plugins:
- jekyll-remote-theme
Pages without a layout use the theme’s default layout automatically on GitHub Pages.
Configuration
All settings are optional.
| Setting | Default | Use |
|---|---|---|
title |
Repository name | Site name in the page title and social previews |
description |
Repository description | Meta and social preview description |
theme-color |

Browser UI color |
icon |
ROOST mark | Favicon, relative to the site root |

“Source Code”, the site’s GitHub repository | Button at the end of the header; set cta: false to hide it |
mastodon.url, mastodon.handle |
None | Mastodon verification and author attribution |
The header always shows the ROOST mark (linking to roost.tools) and your site’s title (linking to its home page). To use a different call to action:
cta:
title: Join Discord
url: https://discord.gg/5Csqnw2FSQ
Navigation
Every page with a title is listed in the header and footer automatically, except the home page (the site title already links there). Pages are sorted by title; use front matter to adjust:
| Front matter | Use |
|---|---|
order |
Number to sort by; ordered pages come before the rest |
nav_title |
Shorter label for the navigation, if the page title is long |
hidden |
Set to true to leave the page out |
Customizing
Any theme file can be overridden by adding a file at the same path to your site. To add your own styles or scripts without replacing anything, create _includes/head-custom.html:
<link rel="stylesheet" href="{{ '/style.css' | relative_url }}">
The brand colors and fonts are available as CSS custom properties, like var(--roost-yellow) and var(--font-display).
